Unlocking Potential! The Power of Experiential Education in Strengthening Resilience and Coping Skills for Systems-Impacted Youth

Wed, Nov 12, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Liberty Salon N - M4

Abstract

Youth impacted by systems often experience high levels of trauma, adversity, and distrust, creating significant barriers to personal growth and long-term success. Traditional educational models frequently fail to engage youth or address their complex emotional and behavioral needs in a way that opens them up to new opportunities. Experiential education, provides a powerful framework for fostering resilience, emotion regulation, and positive coping skills through meaningful participation and strong relationships. This study explores how hands-on, immersive learning experiences help justice-involved and at-risk youth build trust, develop a sense of belonging, and take an active role in their personal growth. Findings highlight a successful national model that leverages experiential education to cultivate helping alliances, promote positive social interactions, and empower youth through active engagement in learning and goal-setting. By combining structured activities with therapeutic support, this approach reinforces the importance of relationships and participation in fostering self-efficacy, emotional well-being, and long-term success. Study implications emphasize the need for professionals working with systems-impacted youth to integrate experiential education into behavioral health and rehabilitative programs. Additionally, findings advocate for policies that expand access to experiential learning opportunities for committed youth, ensuring more youth benefit from these transformative experiences.
