The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between different substance types (binge-drinking, illicit drugs, and over the counter drugs) and whether someone is at a higher chance of property/violent offending, property/violent victimization, or both. In addition, to someone’s substance use this study considers the effect that gender has on these relationships. To conduct this study, I will use the Risk and Reactions to Crime dataset, involving a national sample of 1500 adults in the United States (Wilcox & McNealey, 2021). Using multinomial regression, this study will examine the potential differential effects of illicit substances, and the interaction with gender thereof, on (1) offending only, (2) victimization only, (3) offending and victimization, and (4) non-involvement (i.e., neither offending or victimization). Results have implications for a gendered understanding of the victim-offender overlap.
