Substantial evidence shows that police patrol patterns often fail to maximise police time in places where serious violence is most likely to occur. This wastage of police time in low crime locations can be reduced by the ‘Google Maps’ digital revolution in route guidance to ordinary drivers. Both public and police familiarity with this tool provides a strong theoretical basis for policing by consent. This paper demonstrates the application of that concept to ear-worn ‘’police pods’’ for listening to foot patrol guidance. The demonstration displays the mapping of such patrols within small areas suffering up to 120 weapons crimes over 2 years, where most street locations are nonetheless crime-free for that entire period.
