Implementing the National Public Defense Workload Study Case Weights: A Case Study from King County, Washington (Seattle)

Abstract

The Department of Public Defense in King County, Washington is currently implementing maximum annual caseload case credit limits for its adult and juvenile criminal units based on the NPDWS and locally developed standards published by the Washington State Bar Association. This presentation will describe how King County has interpreted the guidance and implemented the standards, including a discussion on how workload is tracked and modeled, as well as the benefits and challenges experienced by the agency throughout the implementation process.
