Geopolitical Factors and MMIWG2 Case Closure: Exploring the Impact of Macro-Level Variables on Investigative Outcomes

Wed, Nov 12, 9:30 to 10:50am, Marquis Salon 12 - M2

Abstract

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit (MMIWG2) individuals are underrepresented in academic literature and law enforcement databases across North America. The lasting histories of colonization and systemic racism in the United States make Indigenous peoples particularly vulnerable to victimization and erasure. Advocates and academics have made limited progress in spreading awareness and protecting MMIWG2. In addition, scholars have neglected to understand the role that geopolitical factors may play in MMIWG2. Using the largest existing database of MMIWG2 in the United States and Canada, this study examines the influence of key geopolitical variables on case resolution across jurisdictions in the United States. Results indicate a significant relationship between select factors and case outcomes.
