The contentious relationship between the LGBTQIA+ community and police is well documented (Grasso et al., 2024; Robinson, 2020; Vogler, 2021; Chauncey, 1994), but research falls short on the nuanced interactions between young folx in the community and police. The aim of this study is to uncover the underlying complexities within interactions between young folx (18-24) and police. The plethora of anti-LGBTQIA+ bills proposed nationally during this legislative session, targeting education, healthcare, freedom of expression and more, underscores how crucial is it to examine the intricacies of these interactions. Qualitative methods such as semi-structured interviews and flexible coding allow for an intersectional examination of identities, self-concept, performativity, and power. By studying these interactions through young folx perceptions, critical issues can be identified and used to make recommendations based on the needs of the marginalized community. This study extends the current literature regarding how power manifests within interactions, consciousness of expression, and LGBTQIA+ folx relations with police, particularly youth and young folx.
