The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) began a subnational estimation program for the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) in 2016, which allowed for estimation of criminal victimizations in the 22 most populous U.S. states. The most recent BJS report on subnational estimates from the NCVS compares victimization rates and reporting to police in the 22 largest states between the aggregate periods of 2017-2019 and 2020-2022. The report also compares the state-level victimization rates to the whole U.S. within the 2020-2022 period. This presentation discusses findings from the report and the methodology used to generate the NCVS state-level estimates.
