Restrictive housing (RH) placements are associated with many challenges during incarceration and upon reentry. These challenges include, but are not limited to, increased mental health needs, increased rates of misconduct, increased criminogenic risk and need scores, reduced access to employment post-release, and increased recidivism rates post-release. These challenges may be worse when RH placements occur just prior to release, and especially so if the incarcerated person loses access to programming and reentry planning. In this study, we evaluate the implementation and impact of a recent pilot of a RH reentry program designed within the principles of effective intervention framework. Two state correctional facilities implemented a randomized control trial of the program. We present an overview of the implementation process, preliminary results, and successes and challenges of both installing a reentry program for incarcerated individuals in RH and evaluating it using an experimental design.
