Poster #209 - The Futurescape of Justice: Improving Public Safety Using a Futures Analytical Framework

Thu, Nov 13, 6:30 to 7:20pm, Marquis Salon 5 - M2

Abstract

Forward thinking is crucial for effective policing, as it allows agencies to anticipate and prepare for future challenges. This project aimed to explore the future of the criminal justice system over the next 10-15 years by leveraging current research and trends through a two-fold approach. First, our team collaborated with leading subject matter experts, practitioners, and individuals with lived experience to discuss emerging technology, community involvement, civilianization, and leadership and culture through several “fireside chats.” Using a futures analysis framework, we examined the social, technological, economic, environmental, and political (STEEP) factors that may influence the field. Our goal was to identify opportunities to mitigate risks and promote successes. Second, we conducted a futures workshop with a local police department to engage stakeholders in planning for long-term risks and impacts, which most agencies lack the time or resources to address effectively. These findings, based on current research implications for the police department’s city and the justice system at large, were provided to guide their strategic planning efforts for the next decade.
