Re-evaluating Structured Decision-Making Tools in Community Corrections: A Collaborative Approach in Colorado

Fri, Nov 14, 9:30 to 10:50am, Monument - M4

Abstract

This study examines the re-evaluation and refinement of a Structured Decision-Making (SDM) tool used by a Colorado Community Corrections Board to guide placement decisions for individuals transitioning from incarceration to community corrections. In collaboration with the University of Northern Colorado, this project aims to enhance the existing SDM tool by incorporating updated data, board member feedback, and evidence-based practices. Through observations of board meetings, individual interviews, and analysis of case data, the study seeks to identify the most critical decision-making factors and assess the tool’s effectiveness in promoting fair, transparent, and efficient community corrections placement decisions. This project highlights the intersection of academic research and local government practice, aiming to improve the decision-making process and contribute to positive outcomes for individuals in the criminal justice system.
