The recruitment and retention of police officers is an ongoing challenge for many law enforcement agencies across the U.S., creating strain on individual officers and public safety departments. The reduction in applicant pools, along with competition between agencies for candidates, exacerbates the difficulty in addressing staffing needs. This paper argues that by creating a supportive environment for police officers one that offers opportunities for work flexibility, varied assignments, competitive compensation, and establishes positive policing standards that foster the agency's positive perception can help attract qualified candidates.
