Silverspot Spotlight: Illuminating Senior Crime Hotspots in Sarasota - CANCELLED

Thu, Nov 13, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Supreme Court - M4

Abstract

This study investigates crime hotspots centered on senior victims in Sarasota, Florida—a prominent leisure destination for seniors. Traditional crime research has largely focused on general populations, overlooking the unique vulnerabilities and victimization patterns among seniors. Considering the physical frailty of older adults and the growing size of the senior population, there is a pressing need to understand how crime opportunities manifest in environments frequented by this group. Our research introduces the concept of “Silverspots,” identifying specific locales where senior victimization is prevalent. We employ spatial analysis to detect and predict these hotspots, examining underlying environmental and situational factors that contribute to senior-targeted crimes. Findings from this study offer theoretical insights into opportunity structures related to physical vulnerability and provide empirical evidence to support targeted crime prevention strategies. Detailed policy implications and recommendations are discussed to enhance urban safety measures, ultimately contributing to improved protective strategies for the senior community in high-risk areas.
