Numerous desistance theories have been proposed suggesting various causal mechanisms ranging from structural, agentic, or the interaction of both. Little attention has been paid to the concept of reflexivity in relation to agency. Archer's (2003) theory on reflexivity suggests that an individuals internal dialogue is the key mechanism mediating the relationship between structure and agency and that individuals vary in their mode of reflexivity. This mixed-methods study utilizes these concepts to further illuminate the role of reflexivity in the desistance from substance abuse. Quantitative analysis of a wide-reaching internet survey will inform purposive sampling for in-depth interviews. Results will indicate whether preferences in reflexivity shape pathways to desistance and should inform treatment.
