Correctional environments shape the experiences and well-being of both staff and incarcerated residents, yet perspectives on key aspects of prison life can vary significantly between these groups. This presentation explores differences in perceptions of safety, quality of sleep, psychological and emotional wellness, physical health, and overall life outlook among security staff, non-security staff, and incarcerated individuals across multiple correctional facilities. With funding from the National Institute of Justice, the CNA Corporation (CNA) collected survey data from five Minnesota Department of Corrections facilities to analyze how these groups experience and interpret their environment and discuss implications for institutional policies, workforce well-being, and correctional reform efforts. Findings offer insights into the similarities and differences of these groups, highlighting opportunities to enhance conditions for all individuals living and working within prison settings.
