Objectives: The creation of the DATA CoLab represents an acknowledgement that gun violence is a public health issue and should be addressed through intentional collaboration with community organizations and community members. In its first years, the CoLab aims to learn from community members and organizations and develop an interdisciplinary toolkit for similarly situated initiatives moving forward.
Methods: To assess the social, structural, political, and public health implications impacting regions with high rates of gun violence, the DATA CoLab was heavily informed by Community Based Participatory Approaches (CBPA) to support collaborator led projects. Through the incorporation of community insights, academic partner collaboration, and place-based analysis, DATA CoLab will continue to uplift the relationship among public health tools, trauma-informed interventions, and gun violence mitigation strategies.
Conclusions/Implications: The DATA CoLab aims to identify additional opportunities for collaboration among community-based organizations, prosecutor offices, and public health professionals and leaders across the city to address the impact that gun violence has on mental health and cycles of trauma. The DATA CoLab -works with community partners; to share insights about trauma-informed interventions through community engagement efforts.
