Unintended Positive Impacts of the G.R.E.A.T. Program: How does the Treatment Group Fare Financially?

Thu, Nov 13, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Liberty Salon N - M4

Abstract

Objective: Evaluations of the G.R.E.A.T. program indicate that it can reduce gang membership as well as improve attitudes toward the police. While these were among the stated goals of the program, the G.R.E.A.T. curriculum included lessons (e.g., goal setting, problem-solving) that could have an impact on other outcomes throughout the life course. Methods: For the purpose of this presentation, we will leverage the experimental design of the GREAT evaluation to determine if those who received the G.R.E.A.T. program fared better on financial outcomes in early adulthood. Though financial stability is not a stated goal of the program, evidence of long-term impacts has important implications for our understanding of the return on investment of the program.
