Comparing Community Perceptions of Crime to Police data

Sat, Nov 15, 8:00 to 9:20am, George Washington - M1

Abstract

Study purpose: The study was part of an evaluation to develop a community informed response to violence and criminal activities at a high crime apartment complex in Texas.
Data/Methods: A mixed methods approach was utilized. 80 participants responded to a quantitative survey exploring perceptions of crime and safety at the site. These data were supplemented with a series of community forums and by observations at the site by the research team. Resident perceptions were then compared to police call out data over a three-year period. Major findings: Residents reported higher levels of drug related crimes and firearm use than were reported in the official data. They also highlighted sex work in and around the complex, which was absent from the police records. Conclusions: Although community perceptions and police data identified similar criminal activities and threats, obtaining a community perspective is essential for understanding violence and for the development of an effective policing response.
