This talk examines the evolution of open source intelligence (OSINT) in criminology from the perspective of a university professor who has taught OSINT extensively. Drawing on years of classroom experience, I discuss the aspects of open source data that have generated student interests. The discussion highlights not only the rich variety of open sources but also the practical challenges inherent in collecting and verifying such information. Among these challenges are data privacy issues, the overwhelming volume of data, misinformation, and the constantly evolving technological landscape that demands adaptability from both students and practitioners. Furthermore, this presentation reflects on the transformation of OSINT methodologies over time, illustrating how technological advances and increased digital interconnectivity have reshaped investigative approaches in criminology.
