From Scholarship to Service – Reflecting on the ASC San Francisco Initiative

Abstract

This presentation will reflect on the ASC 2024 service initiative in San Francisco, where criminology scholars and students came together to support individuals experiencing homelessness. During the conference, participants assembled and distributed over 100 essential bags containing hygiene products, non-perishable food items, and other necessities. The initiative highlighted the importance of direct service within the field of criminology, demonstrating how academic conferences can serve as platforms for both scholarship and social impact. This discussion will explore the significance of integrating community service into professional gatherings, emphasizing the power of collective action in addressing systemic social issues. The presentation will also share insights from participants, discuss challenges faced during the event, and outline lessons learned that will inform future service initiatives.
