Crime classification systems vary by state, influencing sentencing outcomes for similar offenses. This study examines how differences in crime classifications such as felony vs. misdemeanor designations and prison admission sentencing guidelines, contribute to disparities in sentencing outcomes across the United States. Using a mixed-methods approach, we will analyze prison admission and sentencing data across multiple states, compare statutory crime classifications, and conduct regression analysis to assess the relationship between classification structures and sentencing severity. Findings will provide insights into how legal definitions shape sentencing disparities and inform policy recommendations for standardizing crime classification systems.
