The Safety and Justice Challenge (SJC) has been funding research on criminal justice reform for over a decade. This unprecedented initiative is working with 50+ sites across the nation and is supporting implementation of a variety of reforms with the goals of reducing jail populations and eliminating racial and ethnic disparities. This presentation will highlight overall lessons learned from SJC's work, then dive into findings from smaller, local pretrial reforms including deflection, diversion, Population Review Teams, and court appearance supports. Finally, we will explore how a more sweeping policy change like bail reform legislation can impact jail populations.
