E-Script Scam: Exploring the Illicit Prescription Drug Market on Telegram

Thu, Nov 13, 8:00 to 9:20am, Independence Salon G - M4

Abstract

This study explores the operations of illicit pharmacy channels on Telegram, a platform known for facilitating financial fraud, arms trade, and recreational drug sales, focusing on illegal prescription drug sales. By analyzing 15 such channels, the research identifies some patterns of audience engagement, product marketing strategies, and potential insider involvement from pharmaceutical professionals. Findings reveal that many sellers display industry knowledge, using detailed drug descriptions and insider terminology, while regulatory pressures have led to significant channel instability. Existing research has primarily focused on the sale of recreational substances via encrypted platforms, whereas the current study examines the public health risks posed by counterfeit pharmaceutical products promoted via Telegram. The study may be interesting for cybercrime researchers, criminal justice policymakers, and law enforcement, emphasizing the need for improved strategies to disrupt illicit drug activities.
