The PeerConnect App: Usability, Impact, and Strategic Recommendations for Enhancing Peer Support Among Public Safety Personnel

Thu, Nov 13, 9:30 to 10:50am, Liberty Salon O - M4

Abstract

The PeerConnect app was designed to support public safety personnel (PSP) by facilitating peer support and promoting well-being. This evaluation, conducted in 2021–2022, assessed its usability, effectiveness, and impact among paramedics, police officers, and correctional workers in Ontario, Canada. Using surveys (N=455) and interviews (N=23), the study examined engagement, satisfaction, and challenges in app adoption. Results showed that 49.7% of participants used PeerConnect, with over 70% expressing satisfaction. Connect and Newsfeed were the most used features, yet many participants rarely engaged with the app. Users valued its convenience, but non-users questioned its necessity or preferred in-person support. While app users self-reported better mental health than non-users, no statistical link was found between app usage and improved well-being. Recommendations include continued support for PeerConnect, improved promotion, and efforts to reduce stigma around mental health. Employers should avoid relying solely on the app as a solution for workplace well-being. Negotiating lower subscription costs and establishing support mechanisms for peer supporters are also advised. Addressing these factors will optimize PeerConnect’s role in public safety services and enhance its contribution to PSP well-being.
