Fear and Academic Success Among University Students

Wed, Nov 12, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Marquis Salon 3 - M2

Abstract

The current study used data from the Healthy Minds Study (HMS) to examine how students feel while on campus as it relates to their academic progress. The HMS is a study designed to measure various concepts regarding adolescents and young adults as they progress through educational institutions. The current study included n = 13,730 students in the analytical sample. The results of multivariable regression analyses indicated that students who reported feeling unsafe (both during the day and during the night) were more likely to make non-satisfactory academic achievement towards their degree. These findings suggest that universities should take steps to improve feelings of safety while on campus to help students succeed in making satisfactory progress towards their degree.
