Creating a Data Repository with Publicly Available Data

Wed, Nov 12, 5:00 to 6:20pm, Liberty Salon O - M4

Abstract

Having up to date information on trends is essential for policy evaluation. Searching for information ad hoc can lead to conflicting data sources and expend more resources in the long term. Organizations like CJI need to find innovative solutions to disseminate accurate information quickly and in a format that is easily understood by lay audiences. Centralizing, standardizing, and automating frequently requested information can save time and improve validity. In 2024 CJI created a crime trends data repository using vetted sources that can be used throughout the organization. The data repository allows us to quickly generate accurate data visuals and make quick comparisons between states. We will discuss the creation, challenges, and benefits of creating a data repository.
