Basic Research into Practice: Intimate Partner Violence Prevention

Fri, Nov 14, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Marquis Salon 12 - M2

Abstract

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a serious crime that impacts criminal justice, public health, and human rights. It costs the government billions of dollars due to medical expenses and the costs associated with investigating IPV-related incidents. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the urgent needs of victims and survivors of domestic violence, making it essential to address this issue as a top societal priority.
This paper explores the role of translational science in converting scientific discoveries into effective measures for addressing and preventing IPV. It will demonstrate how a digital tool can serve as an intermediary platform that: (1) educates individuals—both those at risk and those currently experiencing IPV—about intimate partner violence; (2) assists them in recognizing their vulnerable situations and understanding their own risk; and (3) prepares them to seek help when needed.
