Fake Porn is Not Real Porn: Public Perceptions of the Legality of Deep Fake Pornography

Sat, Nov 15, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Tulip - Second Floor

Abstract

Existing studies underscored the heightened use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create deep fake online content. Deep fake pornography, for example, has emerged as one of the most common forms of deep fake content, and is now considered a serious form of technology facilitated sexual abuse. Research, however, on public attitudes related to deep fake pornography remain understudied. Using a survey experiment, we present participants with a scenario about revenge pornography or AI-generated revenge pornography. The current analysis examines participant perceptions of legality to better understand if people view AI-generated content differently. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.
