Shifting Patterns of Gender Based Violence in India

Fri, Nov 14, 8:00 to 9:20am, Independence Salon H - M4

Abstract

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a global human rights concern with profound public health implications. Using the 2019-2021 National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), the study focuses on intimate partner violence. The study analyzes the prevalence and risk factors of intimate partner violence among women in India aged 18-49 since age 15. The National Family Health Survey-5 data shows that 29% of women in the age group 18-49 experienced physical violence, and 6 % experienced sexual violence since they were 15. In the 2005-2006 National Family Health Survey-3 survey, women aged 18-49 reported 31 % physical violence and 8.3 % sexual violence since age 15. The research compares socio-economic determinants of intimate partner violence and trends between 2005 and 2021. Multivariate logistic regression models are used to examine the risk factors, such as household wealth, education, employment, and cultural norms.
