OBJECTIVE
To examine and compare news media coverage of victims of anti-trans fatal violence in the United States between 2022 and 2024. Anti-trans fatal violence refers to the hate-motivated murder of transgender and gender-diverse individuals.
DATA/METHODS
Using a mixed-methods content analysis of media articles published in US news outlets between 2022-2024, the authors examine shifts in the journalistic framing of transgender and gender-diverse victims of fatal hate crimes.
RESULTS
Despite historically negative portrayals of trans victims of fatal hate crimes, the authors show victims are increasingly portrayed through the inclusion of advocacy perspectives and discussions of systemic violence. Further, the authors highlight trends in language use, sourcing practices, and the evolving role of advocacy organizations in shaping public narratives around transgender homicide.
CONCLUSIONS
This study adds to the authors’ previous published research on media portrayals of anti-trans fatal violence, and the overall the limited research on trans hate crimes in the United States.
