Surviving strangulation: A tale of two samples

Thu, Nov 13, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Marquis Salon 12 - M2

Abstract

Non-fatal asphyxiation assaults by intimate partners, such as strangulation and suffocation, pose a significant risk for intimate partner homicide. However, few studies have identified the demographic and contextual factors that increase the risk for victimization. Grounded in a social ecological framework, this study examines risk factors for intimate partner asphyxiation (IPA) among U.S. adults who from two community samples. The findings provide important insight into the role of gender and sexual orientation in shaping risk factors for lethal forms of domestic violence.
