This study investigates the mechanisms of the illegal trafficking of snakes as exotic pets. Using a script analysis methodology, the study outlines four key stages in the trafficking process: illegal poaching, smuggling, commercialization through pet shops and online markets, and illegal possession. Findings reveal that both wild-sourced and captive-bred snakes are commonly trafficked, and that trafficking routes involve complex networks using air, sea, and land transport. The commercialization of snakes occurs through reptile fairs, pet shops, and online platforms, where sellers may falsify documentation to legitimize illegal transactions. Trafficking of live snakes requires a multi-faceted approach, with interventions tailored to the specific context where each of the activities takes place.
