Title: A Quantitative Analysis of the Erasure of Convict Criminology

Fri, Nov 14, 9:30 to 10:50am, Judiciary Square - M3

Abstract

This paper evaluates if and how criminological studies on lived experience (LE) within the criminal legal system (CLS) incorporate research conducted by academics with criminal records. Within Convict Criminology, a subfield comprised of academics with criminal records who have earned doctoral degrees, there is growing concern that the LE movement is actively excluding over 25 years of existing research developed by convict criminologists. Our primary research question: Is the growing lived experience movement in criminology including convict criminological research in their published research? We developed a database of 500 LE articles published within the past 15 years. We then analyzed the reference pages to locate sources written by the thirty most prominent convict criminologists of all time.
