This case study focuses on the Paterson Healing Collective (PHC), a pioneering hospital-based violence intervention program (HVIP) that exemplifies the critical role of healthcare in addressing the cycle of violence in communities. Located in Paterson, New Jersey, PHC was established to intervene at a crucial moment when individuals receive treatment for violent injuries, transforming healthcare settings into avenues for holistic community healing. The study examines the approach of PHC, which integrates trauma-informed care, personalized case management, and peer support to assist survivors of violence. By collaborating with local organizations, community stakeholders and social services, the PHC provides comprehensive support that addresses not only immediate medical needs but also the underlying issues contributing to violence, such as poverty, trauma, and lack of access to resources. Through patient testimonials and quantitative data on recidivism and testimonials from community members on community safety, this case study highlights the effectiveness of PHC in empowering individuals to reclaim their lives, while simultaneously fostering a culture of accountability and resilience within the community. Attendees will gain insight into the importance of HVIPs like the Paterson Healing Collective in creating safer, healthier environments and understand how healthcare can lead the way in social justice and violence prevention.
