Neighborhood Healers: Hurt People Hurt People, but Healed People Heal Others and Can Help Guide Our Youth

Wed, Nov 12, 5:00 to 6:20pm, Marquis Salon 13 - M2

Abstract

This presentation highlights the urgency of developing culturally competent prevention programs aimed at youth at high risk of incarceration. With the school-to-prison pipeline disproportionately affecting marginalized communities, it is essential to implement strategies that not only acknowledge but embrace the unique cultural contexts of these young individuals. Central to our approach is the inclusion of community healers—individuals who have successfully transformed their lives—who serve as mentors and role models for at promise youth. By integrating social-emotional learning (SEL) programming with violence intervention techniques and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) strategies, these programs equip youth with the tools to make informed decisions, navigate challenges, and cultivate resilience. Key partnerships with schools and community organizations are critical for disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline and establishing a school-to-support pipeline. This presentation will showcase successful programs and their transformative impact, emphasizing the necessity of collaboration in creating a supportive network for youth. Attendees will learn about actionable strategies for implementing culturally responsive practices that empower young individuals, fostering pathways to positive futures and community well-being. Join us in exploring how we can collectively nurture a generation that thrives and contributes positively to society.
