Fri, Nov 14, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Howard University - M1

Abstract

This presentation describes and discusses this 15-week educational program held at HBCUs with local police departments, community members and students of color. Rich narratives collected from weekly-course reflection papers from law enforcement, minority students and community members are used to highlight brutally honest storytelling and negative and positive experiences. Findings shed light on the nature of police-community relationship building and provides insights into creative ways to engage police and the true community policing. The presenter and program founder, Dr. Bahiyyah Muhammad will discuss the history of the model, past and current partnerships and the radical components of the curriculum which include local excursions, museum visits, buddy presentations and the iconic “Closing Ceremony” that serves and the official commencement of each PIO cohort.
