Abstract

The purpose of this study is to highlight the multifaceted challenges that Maya women face when navigating the aftermath of gender-based violence in Belize, a topic that is severely under researched. This research project explores the intricate fabric of lived experiences and perceptions of Maya women regarding their interactions with law enforcement, legal institutions, and support services following such traumatic events. Central to this investigation is the profound impact that these interactions have on their trust in the criminal justice system. Beyond the legal and judicial realm, this study delves into how their experiences resonate throughout their general health and wellbeing, shedding light on the broader societal and familial implications. By examining the support systems that are available to Maya women in Belize, or often lacking, this research aims to illuminate the nuanced dynamics that shape the lives of Maya women in Belize, offering a critical perspective on the intersection of culture, gender, justice, and health.
