The Moderating Effects of Parental Attachment and School Connectedness on the Relationship Between Bullying and Suicidality

Sat, Nov 15, 8:00 to 9:20am, Scarlet Oak - Second Floor

Abstract

Suicide has been recognized as the third-leading cause of death among US high school students ages 14-18 (CDC 2024), and 22% of US students ages 12-18 have reported being bullied (National Center for Education Statistics, 2022). With such alarming statistics, more research is imperative for understanding the effects the relationship between bullying and suicidality. The present study examines the impact of school connectedness and parental attachment on the relationship between bullying and suicidality using data from the 2024 Florida and Youth Substance Abuse Survey (FYSAS). Previous work has found a buffering role of parental attachment and school connectedness among youth (De Luca, Caramanis, and Zhang 2024) using the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study, and it is expected that our study will find similar results.
