With sensational crimes reported within New York City' subway system, is this reality or perception? First, a historical analysis of subway crime from the 1990s to present is reviewed and compared with ridership figures to determine if crime rates within New York City's subway system are truly rising. Results indicate that subway crime is much lower than the national average rate for violent crimes. In addition, an interrupted time series analysis examining the effect of the death of Jordan Neely by Daniel Penny in May of 2023 will be examined upon the upcoming second anniversary of Jordan Neely’s death to see if there was any effect on the crime rate within the New York City subway system using monthly data from 2020 provided to the New York City Council.
