Correlates of Police Suicides in Turkey: A Multivariate Logistic Regression Analysis of Individual, Family & Professional Factors

Fri, Nov 14, 9:30 to 10:50am, Liberty Salon K - M4

Abstract

Police suicides represent a critical yet underexplored issue in all over the World. This study
investigates the individual, social, and professional correlates of suicide among Turkish law
enforcement personnel using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Drawing on official records
and case data, the study identifies key risk factors including alcohol and drug abuse, psychiatric
disorders, prior suicide attempts, and firearm accessibility. In contrast, protective factors such as
strong family ties, having children, and developed coping skills appear to mitigate suicide risk. By
integrating these variables, the research offers a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted
nature of police suicides and emphasizes the urgent need for targeted mental health interventions
and institutional support mechanisms. The findings aim to inform policy, prevention programs,
and further research on mental health and well-being in law enforcement contexts.
