Poster #251 - Victimization and Police Brutality in Nigeria: A Critical Assessment

Thu, Nov 13, 6:30 to 7:20pm, Marquis Salon 5 - M2

Abstract

Over the years there have been several reports about police brutality in Nigeria, including media publications and agitation from different civil liberty and human rights organizations. Despite the different calls for reformation of the Nigerian Police Force, there has been an increase in the use of force by law enforcement officers, including unlawful arrest, extrajudicial killings, and torture. This study examines the factors that predict police officers’ use of force and victimization of Nigerians. The study uses primary data gathered from three states with the highest record of police brutality: Lagos, Rivers, and Edo States. The findings from this study adds to the existing body of knowledge about policing systems around the world, specifically the challenges of human rights violation by the Nigerian Police Force.
