Incarceration and mental health problems are deeply connected, with high rates of anxiety, depression, and trauma among incarcerated individuals. Unfortunately, prison mental health care is often insufficient, leaving many without support. However, some low-cost, effective programs—such as long-distance running, yoga, arts-based therapies, and animal-assisted therapy—offer significant therapeutic benefits. These programs help manage stress, regulate emotions, and foster purpose, with directly impacted individuals reporting improved mental health and reduced recidivism. Key factors in their success include accessibility, community-building, and personal transformation. Despite their benefits and affordability, these programs remain underutilized. This raises an important question: if they are so effective and low-cost, why aren’t they more widely used? This project explores that gap, advocating for further research and greater integration of these programs into the correctional system. By examining their success, we challenge the status quo and push for more practical, accessible rehabilitation in prisons.
