Poster #77 - Evaluating Eco-rationality of Policies to Save Turag River and Its Impact on River-Dependent Communities

Thu, Nov 13, 6:30 to 7:20pm, Marquis Salon 5 - M2

Abstract

The eco-rationality of measures intended to protect Bangladesh's Turag River and their effects on populations that depend on it are investigated in this research proposal. The study fills a significant knowledge gap about how conservation efforts impact community well-being and ecological restoration. Through qualitative methods such as focus groups, participant observation, and key informant interviews, the study will analyze the eco-rationality of current conservation policies, their efficacy in improving the environment, their socioeconomic effects on local communities, and formulate suggestions for policy changes that could improve ecological sustainability and community well-being. The research recognizes the conflicts between social justice and environmental preservation, pointing out that urban river governance frameworks that put consumer-citizen ecological requirements first frequently exclude river-dependent populations, such as farming, fishing, and foraging groups. This study attempts to provide more equitable methods of river conservation that meet ecological and social demands by thoroughly analyzing the difficulties in implementing policies and the effects on the community.
