Reducing the Incidence of Burglary Crimes in Gauteng South Afirica through Intelligence Led Policing

Fri, Nov 14, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Woodley Park - M3

Abstract

Official statistics from South Africa shows that household related have increased tremendously. In this upsurge, burglary is rated as the most common crime experienced by households in South Africa. Despite the high incidence of burglary incident, it does not enjoy the same attraction from both pundits and other South Africans as other violent crimes as robbery, murder and likes until recently. Admittedly, researchers have recently expended appreciable intellectual efforts towards reducing the rising curve of burglary incidents in SA, but such efforts are yet to yield the desired results (see Newton, Rogerson & Hirschfield, 2008; Siegel, 2010; Marks & Overall, 2015; Huigen, 2021; Mpofu, Sibisi & Sibisi, 2023).
Even though the above interventions are quite appreciated, they have not significantly addressed the increasing curve of burglary crimes in SA. Little or no attempt was done in the area of intelligence led policing even when it was successfully applied in other domestic crime variant (Zinn, 2010). It therefore means that more interventions are required. The aim of the current research is to investigate the utility of reducing the spate of burglary crimes in Gauteng Province of SA through intelligence led policing- targeting perpetrators’ profiling, identification, and prosecution- using mixed-methodological approach.
