Currently there is a significant gap in understanding the breadth of digital evidence collection and its use in investigations. While some forensic science laboratories and law enforcement units have indicated testing capabilities, it remains unclear what methodologies and standard procedures are employed with digital evidence. This gap extends through the lifecycle of digital evidence from collection and analysis to retention and utilization. This ongoing pilot study aims to explore how criminal justice entities 1) define digital evidence 2) collect, analyze, and retain digital evidence and 3) use findings acquired from digital evidence and assess its impact on their investigations. This will be completed by conducting focus groups with practitioners and researchers, developing and surveying members of the community, and pilot testing a survey instrument in the effort to address these questions.
