While literature frequently emphasizes female victims of physical violence, research indicates that men also experience abuse at significant rates, often in the form of emotional and/or psychological abuse–including but not limited to verbal intimidation, financial control, or isolation. Societal expectations and institutional biases seldom account for males being victims, leading them to be stigmatized and face unique barriers in seeking support. This discussion explores the unique challenges male victims encounter when accessing resources or reporting the abuse, along with the types of abuse experienced, thus bringing visibility to an area of research that is often overlooked. Implications for future research directions and strategies for mitigating or improving their experiences will also be discussed.
