Potential Research Collaboration and Study Abroad Experience in Germany

Sat, Nov 15, 9:30 to 10:50am, Eastern Market - M3

Abstract

1) One of the research areas for collaboration could involve a comparison of different models of sentencing and corrections in regard to indicators such as recidivism, societal integration, treatment of inmates within prisons. Germany has been at the forefront of implementing various public sector reforms, including criminal justice policies with a focus on rehabilitation and resocialization. We are specifically interested in comparatively examining sentencing and correctional practices in the U.S. and Germany, including policies addressing recidivism and reintegration of offenders, subculture of violence as well as improving social climate within prisons. Such approach allows researchers to gain insights and knowledge from diverse perspectives and develop a greater understanding of how criminal justice systems, practices and policies vary across different contexts.
2) The main goal of this proposed course is provide students with a comparative analysis of different legal and criminal justice systems, particularly in Germany and the United States. Students will explore historical contexts and best practices (e.g., police, courts, prisons) associated with each country's justice system. This academic experience can help students develop a global perspective for potential careers in criminal justice and social services. While students will complete the initial coursework throughout the semester, students will have an opportunity to participate in a week-long immersive trip to Germany. Moreover, students will explore Germany's diverse culture and history through various excursions. Specific learning objectives will be provided at a later date. Reciprocal study abroad opportunities may be discussed.
