This presentation explores internal displacement as a distinct social experience that offers important insights into what Traunmüller et al. (2015) describe as the “fundamental question of order and the role of conflict for the social integration of human societies.” It focuses on the impact of war and displacement on institutional trust, perceptions of crime, feelings of safety, and attitudes towards the police. Drawing on open-ended responses from three waves of the Safety and Crime Survey (2022, 2023, and 2024), the presentation analyses how internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, and residents who remained in the city of Kharkiv perceive crime and safety during wartime.
