Poster #133 - International Student Perception on Gun Violence

Thu, Nov 13, 6:30 to 7:20pm, Marquis Salon 5 - M2

Abstract

The United States, known for its widespread firearm accessibility and persistent gun violence, can present a cultural shock for international students, also hosts the largest international student population in the world—and many coming from countries with stricter gun control. While American citizens often debate over the gun control efforts and necessities, and both sides express fear regarding firearm-related incidents, the perceptions and experiences of international students remain underexplored. Using a self-report survey distributed through university international offices, student organizations, and online social media platforms favored by international students, this study investigates international student’s exposure to firearms, attitudes toward firearm policies, and perceptions of American gun violence, as well as their sense of safety, mental well-being, and media consumption. OLS regression are used to examine theoretical key relationships. Implications of key findings for theory and policy are discussed.
