Trauma-Informed Pedagogy

Wed, Nov 12, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Marquis Salon 8 - M2

Abstract

More than half of students report exposure to at least one traumatic event—a disturbing experience that results in disruptive feelings intense enough to have a negative effect on by the time they begin college, with higher exposure rates among marginalized groups. Trauma-informed pedagogies, which aim to address the negative effects of traumatic exposure, can foster safer and more inclusive learning environments for all students by promoting student well-being and learning. Additionally, trauma-informed approaches can benefit instructors who may be exposed to trauma either directly or indirectly by encouraging self-care practices and creating a classroom environment that promotes mutual respect. Trauma-informed pedagogies are especially important in criminology and criminal justice classes, which often require discussions of traumatic victimization. By sharing principles and practices of trauma-informed pedagogies, this lightning talk will inform classroom practices.
