In South Korea, the number of new CCTV camera installations continues to rise in response to increased demands for public safety. Despite this trend, empirical research on the impact of CCTV on crime prevention remains limited and fragmented, with most studies published in the Korean language. The current study provides a systematic review of 28 eligible studies published between 2004 and 2024 (KCI, DBpia, RISS, Scopus, and Web of Science) to examine the effectiveness of CCTV surveillance on crime. Preliminary findings suggest that while CCTV surveillance is significantly associated with overall crime reduction, its effectiveness in deterring violent crime may be less pronounced. Moreover, significant crime reduction was not equally found across different settings (e.g., residental neighborhoods, commercial areas). In addition to the systematic review, a meta-analysis was conducted to quantify the overall effectiveness of CCTV systems in reducing crime and assess peculiarities in their effectiveness across different settings. Overall, the study findings highlight the need for strategically designed and managed CCTV systems to maximize their crime prevention potential and inform future policy.
